Amazing Resources to Support Reading and Writing

There are endless websites, apps, and programs out there for helping students learn to read, develop comprehension skills, and improve their grammar and the structure of their compositions. Because of that, it can be hard to sort through the noise to find a solution that works – a resource that you can consistently use with a given age group that offers all of the functionality you need as an educator. Here are some of our favorites!

  • Homer is the best early reading skills and phonics app we’ve seen. It is multi-sensory, structured and sequential, and offers lots of varied and fun literacy activities for children between the ages of 2 and 8.

  • Common Lit offers over 2,000 high-quality free reading passages for grades 3-12, complemented by aligned interim assessments, growth-oriented data, and expert-led teacher development.

  • Quill provides free writing and grammar activities for elementary, middle, and high school students with a focus on sentence-combining. Writing better sentences –> writing better essays!

  • From assessment to practice, Writable helps teachers organize their writing programs around research-backed instruction with a focus on lots and lots of opportunities for feedback and revision.
