What is Assistive Technology?

Assistive technology creates opportunities. These resources and tools transform the learning experience for students who learn and think differently. This technology includes any device, equipment, or software that helps people work through tasks they find challenging. And these tools can be as high-tech as word prediction software to help students write, or as simple as a squishy ball for sensory input. Likewise, these resources range from physical devices like crutches to academic ones like graphic organizers. However, our focus will be specifically on assistive technology that can support students’ learning.

Examples of Assistive Technology:

Low-tech examples include: pencil grips, sentence starters, visual schedules, manipulatives, and velcro.

Medium-tech devices include: wheel chairs, audiobooks, headphones, and voice amplification devices.

High-tech examples include: computers, iPads, text-to-speech/speech-to-text programs, and portable word processors.

Benefits of Assistive Technology:

Assistive technology transforms the learning experience for students who think or learn differently. For example, imagine how a computer impacts the learning experience for a student with dysgraphia. Similarly, audiobooks allow students with dyslexia to discover a love of reading. Put simply, these tools help students to do their best. And as a result, they will also feel their best.

However, many worry that assistive tech will interfere with a child’s learning. Some incorrectly believe that using these tools is cheating. Others think that using these resources will create dependence. In reality, the opposite is true. That’s because assistive technology actually makes learning more meaningful for students. After all, these resources allow them to engage more fully with the content they are learning.

How do I know if my child needs assistive technology?

If your child struggles beyond what is typical and age-appropriate, there is probably a tool out there for him or her. Don’t know where to begin? Ask your child’s teacher! From low-tech solutions to high-tech software, there is a huge range of resources available to students. Plus, it is usually fairly easy to access. The key is to find the right tool for your child’s need, big or small. And if you’re feeling stuck, we are always here to help!
